From the Collection: Prints

The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College houses a large collection of prints, covering numerous printmaking methods. Among them are lithography, where drawing in wax or oil on a stone plate provides a surface for ink. Etching is the technique of cutting away parts from a metal plate to create a design for the ink to follow. Collagraphs involve adding materials such as cloth, paper, or plastic to a rigid base, to build up textures and different levels of depth for inking.

The collection also contains the works of an array of artists. A few of the artists represented in our print collection include:

Mary Chenoweth (1918 – 1999) An abstract artist, Chenoweth worked as an instructor at the Fine Arts Center starting in 1953 and taught in the art department at Colorado College from 1957 to 1983. She created numerous etchings, aquatints, and collagraphs, filled with abstract figures and a bold use of black.

R. C. Gorman (1931 – 2005) Gorman worked in an array of media, including sculpture, oil pastel, and printmaking. This collection features several of his lithographs and etchings, which depict women in fluid seated positions or on the verge of rising.

We hope you will appreciate the works of all the artists present in our print collection and enjoy the wide array of technique on display. As we photograph more of our collection, this selection of prints will continue to update.
